Gmail setup instructions for Thunderbird

Following these instructions will allow you to set up multiple G-Mail accounts in Thunderbird.

1. Log into your Gmail account

2. Click “Settings” in the upper right corner

3. Click “Forwarding and POP” from the Settings screen

4. Click “Enable POP only for mail that arrives from now on.” If you click “Enable POP for all mail” it will copy all of the mail you have already received. You may want to do this. It’s up to you.

5. At number 2, select “delete Gmail’s copy.” Otherwise your mailbox on the Gmail server will eventually fill up.

6. Click “Save Changes.”

7. Log out of Gmail (or just close out of the window).

8. Open Thunderbird.

9. Select File then New Account

10. Click the radio button and click “Save”.

11. Type your name and your email address and click Next.

12. Select the POP radio button and type “pop.gmail.com” as the Incoming Server.

13. Uncheck the Use Global Inbox box if you want to have a separate folder.

14. Click Next.

15. For incoming user name, type your Gmail account name and click Next.

16. The SMTP server is smtp.gmail.com.

17. Type the Account Name (will come up by default) and click Next.

18. Leave the box checked to download messages now and click Next.

19. You’ll probably get an error message. No biggie.

20. Right click on the account and select “Properties…”

21. Click “Server Settings.”

22. Change the Port to 995.

23. For security settings, select SSL.

24. In Server Settings, check the first three boxes and the last box.

25. Click OK.

26. If you want to have Thunderbird remember your passwords you won’t have to type it in every time.

27. The port for the SMTP server is 587.
